At its Oct. 29 meeting the Shamokin Area School District Board of Directors recognized middle- and high-school students of the month and heard short introductions from three newly hired teachers. Staff also reviewed recent and upcoming events including a college fair, testing dates, and a fundraiser that raised about $3,000.
The Shamokin Area School District Board of Directors on Oct. 29 recognized student achievements and introduced three new teachers, spotlighting extracurricular and academic activities across the district.
Jordan Timko, a middle school student and the board’s student of the month, told the board, “I got into the National Junior Honor Society. I got accepted, on Monday.” Jordan also listed athletic honors, saying she had been named best offensive player in junior high softball and goalie of the year in junior high soccer.
High school student Veronica Quaid summarized her activities and awards for the board. “I got second place in the investment challenge for Northumberland County,” she said, and described participation in PMEA district chorus, track throwing events, student council and other activities.
District staff reported several recent and upcoming events: a college fair attended by about 30 university representatives; a financial aid night; PSAT testing for 9th–11th grades; roughly 20 seniors participating in “instant decision day” visits with Bloomsburg University; trunk-or-treat that included about 52 trunks; a refresh-recess fundraiser that raised about $3,000 for playground equipment; a career fair scheduled for Nov. 14; ASVAB testing planned for Nov. 12; and National Junior Honor Society/National Honor Society ceremonies scheduled for Nov. 5.
The board also introduced three first-year teachers to attendees. Sierra Coleman, a 2019 Lourdes graduate, said she will teach 10th- and 11th-grade English and a mythology course and is assisting with the high school basketball program. Amanda Lebo described roughly 10 years of classroom experience at several districts and said she will teach middle- and high-school math and support the marching band program. Ari Nolte, a 2021 Shamokin Area graduate who earned her degree at Misericordia University, said she will teach fourth grade and assist with volleyball and basketball programs.
Board members closed the agenda portion that focused on student honors by thanking staff and volunteers who support events and by congratulating athletic and performing groups for recent seasons and competitions.
