The Ashland County Board of Supervisors voted to authorize staff to prepare and submit a grant application to support a nonstate infrastructure project for the Chequamegon Humane Association (CHA). The resolution permits the county grant writer to apply for funding to assist construction of an addition that would expand kennel and animal-control capacity.
A county supervisor explained the CHA has been receiving animals picked up by the sheriff and city and currently lacks adequate space to house animals. The project is a tri-party effort with the city of Ashland and Bayfield County; meeting discussion indicated the city and Bayfield County were expected to each contribute a one-time $50,000 payment and the county would include a one-time $50,000 in its budget to support the project.
Supervisors asked whether the county would be financially obligated if the grant application failed. Staff replied CHA is also pursuing smaller grants and other options; if grants do not cover the full cost the board said additional approvals would be required before the county committed further funds. The motion to authorize the grant application was made by Supervisor Blake and seconded by Supervisor Lorena Negra; the board approved the resolution by voice vote.
