Hialeah $200 rebate not final as council failed to reach quorum, president says

Residents used the public-comment period at the Nov. 3 Hialeah council meeting to criticize a proposed $200 rebate and to press the city to prioritize water-plant repairs and other services.
Barbara Canales of 1681 West 60 Eighth Street urged the city to ‘‘stop spending’’ on what she described as nonessential items and instead fix the Hialeah water plant to full capacity, noting she believed recent tree removals undercut future canopy projects. She called the proposed $200 rebate ‘‘hypocrisy’’ if basic infrastructure remained unfixed.
The council president responded that the $200 rebate had not been finalized: the second reading that would have approved or killed the rebate did not occur because the council did not have a quorum. He told speakers their comments had been heard and that the matter would be reconsidered when the council meets again.
