Pico Rivera launches tree-adoption program with Bezos Earth Fund grant to plant 200 trees and train local youth

City staff, the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps and Green Latinos introduced a tree adoption program at the Oct. 28 City Council meeting, announcing a grant from the Bezos Earth Fund of more than $150,000 to plant over 200 trees across Pico Rivera and train participating local youth.
Victor Farrar, who introduced the program on behalf of the city, said many of the trees will be California native species that provide shade, reduce heat, improve walkability and support pollinators. Renee Jimenez of the San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps said the program also provides workforce-development training: participating youth received more than 100 hours of life-skills and job-readiness training, including OSHA-10, first aid and CPR certifications, as well as financial literacy and leadership training.
Amanda Pantoja of Green Latinos described the effort as an "on-the-ground" climate-resilience program focused on underserved neighborhoods and urged residents to sign up for the city's tree adoption program. City staff said they expect to finish planting over the next 4 to 6 weeks and will distribute certificates of appreciation to youth participants at the meeting.
