Parks & Recreation: council hears that Anthem stopped SilverSneakers support; city offers November discounts

Summary
Parks & Recreation committee heard that Anthem will no longer support the SilverSneakers brand; the director said several insurers continue to cover equivalent programs and the city has extended a Black Friday membership sale through November to help affected seniors.
Councilwoman Kelly asked Parks & Recreation staff about a note in the director’s report that Anthem is no longer supporting SilverSneakers. Director Jen told the committee that private insurers sometimes replace the SilverSneakers brand with their own programs — she cited Renew Active as an example used by UnitedHealthcare in prior years — and that other insurers such as Humana and Medical Mutual continue to offer similar senior fitness supplements.
Jen said the city had experience handling such transitions and that the mayor had extended a Black Friday membership sale for the entire month of November to help residents and members who might be affected by private insurers changing programs. "We have resident membership rates, nonresident membership rates, and nonresident senior special rates for the month of November," Jen said. No formal action was taken; the committee adjourned after noting the membership relief measure.
