Stevenson of the city's Inspectional Services Division told the committee in a written memo dated Oct. 21 that "the facility has demonstrated good faith efforts in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations" and that the business had been given "the go ahead to continue with normal operations." Stevenson signed the letter as the health, safety and equity official for ISD.
Committee members said they had expected a written fire‑department report and wanted the record to include formal documentation of any corrective measures. One councilor said he remained uncomfortable with the nature and location of that type of business in the city and urged caution. Given remaining questions and a desire for a complete written record, the committee moved the licensing item to the full council "without recommendation," meaning the committee submitted a report rather than a favorable or unfavorable endorsement.
Next steps: The matter will appear on the full Lawrence City Council agenda; committee staff asked that the fire department provide its written inspection report for inclusion in the council packet.
