The Hennepin County Administration Operations & Budget Committee on Oct. 21 approved a resolution to dedicate a tree on county property in memory of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.
Commissioner Conley introduced the resolution and described its origin: "This resolution before you is in honor of that," referencing a list of acts of kindness suggested by Hortman's children that included planting a tree. Conley said county staff will work with Hortman's loved ones on a dedication on the South Plaza next year.
Other commissioners offered brief remarks about the couple's community involvement; Commissioner Ollendy noted personal connections and the family's community participation. The committee approved the dedication by voice vote.
County staff will coordinate logistics and the date for a planting ceremony with the Hortman family.
