Rice County awards $26,500 County Road 19 ditch repair contract to James Brothers Construction

The Rice County Board on Oct. 28 approved a contract with James Brothers Construction for $26,500 to perform ditch and channel repair work along County Road 19 south of Faribault.
Highway Superintendent Dennis Luby told the board the county received three quotes: James Brothers Construction at $26,500 (low bid), Randy Timbs/Timbs Excavation at about $41,000, and Weaver Construction at $41,200. Luby said James Brothers had been used for smaller projects previously and "do good work." Because the cost exceeded the county's $25,000 purchasing threshold, board approval was required.
Commissioners asked whether the county could prevent the erosion's cause upstream; staff said work outside the county right of way would require an agreement with the landowner and that watershed contributions may be a factor.
The board moved, seconded and approved the $26,500 contract by voice vote.
