Rice County commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at their Oct. 14 meeting.
County Attorney Brian Mortensen and staff described recent victim‑service work and a modest DOJ grant used to purchase “go‑bag” items — blankets, hygiene supplies, diapers, formula and other transitional items — to be kept available for victims who need to exit unsafe situations quickly. Prosecutors and advocates highlighted a recent jury conviction in which two victims who reported abuse repeatedly said the most meaningful outcome was that someone believed them and supported them through a multi‑year case.
Erica Staub of the Hope Center described the range of advocacy services the center provides and noted that advocates and courthouse deputies work together to help victims who testify feel safe. Hope Center and county victim‑services staff said they continue to coordinate with law enforcement, public health and court staff on multidisciplinary responses.
Why it matters: The proclamation formalizes county recognition of domestic‑violence issues and highlights ongoing service needs, including shelter capacity, advocacy and coordinated courtroom supports for victims. Staff asked the board to note local statistics cited in the proclamation and to continue support for victim services.
