Ramsey County honors Mao Hu Tao for decades of public‑health work with retirement proclamation

The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 21 presented a retirement proclamation honoring Mao Hu Tao for more than three decades of public‑health service to the Hmong community.
Commissioner McGuire and county public‑health leaders outlined Mao’s work as a public health nurse and community health coordinator, including founding the Hmong Healthcare Professionals Coalition and leading health education via television and radio. Speakers recounted Mao’s outreach during infectious‑disease outbreaks and the COVID‑19 pandemic, her role addressing refugees in international settings, and contributions to community programs supporting elders, domestic‑violence prevention and scholarships.
Amy Barron, Ramsey County public health director, described Mao’s career as focused on closing health disparities in the Hmong community and noted her leadership in outreach at events such as the Hmong International Freedom Fest. Dr. Yang, chair of the Hmong Healthcare Professionals Coalition, and other community leaders spoke about Mao’s mentorship and the coalition’s ongoing work.
Mao accepted the proclamation and thanked colleagues, Ramsey County Public Health, family, volunteers and community partners for their support over a career she said was rooted in collective effort.
The board recessed into administrative business after the ceremony.
