The Beautification Arts & Sciences Commission approved adding two new public‑art projects to its work plan: a Heritage Square planter/sculpture improvement and an invitational sculpture garden near the Jim Montoya Community & Senior Center.
For Heritage Square, staff proposed replacing the current planter crowns with artful hardscape or sculptural motifs that would be visually cohesive with the plaza while taking into account weight limits above a parking garage. Commissioners supported the project but repeatedly urged that the work be considered within a broader master‑plan for Heritage Square to avoid piecemeal fixes and to address accessibility and long‑term maintenance.
The proposed sculpture garden for the community and senior center would be a limited invitational purchase program to acquire three to five permanent sculptures (staff cited a purchase budget of up to $25,000 per piece). Staff said they would retain a landscape architect to set installation parameters, drainage and foundation requirements and to reduce staff time during procurement.
Both projects were approved by voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to confirm engineering weight limits, coordinate with facilities and procurement, and return with design parameters and cost estimates for review.
