Flagstaff panel selects temporary Route 66 street artworks; commission approves installations for 2026 centennial

City staff presented the results of a selection panel convened to recommend temporary 3‑D pavement artworks for the Route 66 Centennial celebration on June 6, 2026. The artworks are intended as short‑term, forced‑perspective or illusion pieces on asphalt that will be power‑washed away after the event.
Staff said the program, organized by Discover Flagstaff with BAS support, selected works for two sites: Aspen by Heritage Square (two footprints) and the Flagstaff Mall (three footprints). Materials permitted include nonpermanent chalk and tempera; artists will work with street closures and compressed timelines that emphasize ease of installation and removal.
Panel scoring allocated 30 points for alignment with Route 66 themes (landscape, landmarks, car culture), 30 for originality and visual quality, 30 for relevant experience and 10 for budget reasonableness. Staff presented the selected designs by Eric Greenwalt, Joel Yao, Sharon Chan, Sean McCann and Wayne and Cheryl Renshaw. Selection‑panel members praised applicants’ experience and the creativity of top submissions.
Commissioner discussion noted the committee’s focus on engagement and the program’s goal of creating highly shareable visual moments for the centennial. The commission moved to approve the panel’s recommended temporary artworks; the motion carried by voice vote.
