Polk County schools present first reading of comprehensive high‑school rezoning; Lakeland data to follow

During the Oct. 28 public hearing, Superintendent Hyde updated the board on amendments to the proposed comprehensive high‑school rezoning plan. The most notable change involved boundary adjustments for Winter Haven and Lake Region high schools: several parcels on the southern edge of Lake Lulu South were rezoned to Lake Region High so those students fall inside a two‑mile radius of the school.

Superintendent Hyde said the revised maps affect roughly 47 to 53 students, depending on matriculation, and that the change better balances proximity considerations between the two high schools. "Those are being rezoned to Lake Region. That puts them all within the two‑mile radius of the school... and we're only talking about a total about 47 to 53 students," the superintendent said.

The board also requested additional data addressing potential enrollment impacts at Lakeland High School. Superintendent Hyde committed to providing the requested figures to the board within 24 hours so members could review the projected influx of students and choices families may make about remaining at their current schools.

No vote was taken on rezoning at the Oct. 28 meeting; the item was a first reading. Chair Dr. Allen said the district's process has included extensive community engagement and that the board will continue to listen to concerns before the Nov. 18 meeting when a final vote is scheduled.
