Vista High and district celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and student activities

At the Oct. 27 meeting, student and staff presenters described recent school activities at Vista High and districtwide programs commemorating National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Student organizers highlighted a pink-hat T-shirt sale to support the football team and breast-cancer awareness, an autumn vocal recital in the auditorium and recent athletic accomplishments (district qualifiers in golf and multiple cross-country runners advancing to higher-level competition). Students also announced a town hall focused on student clubs.
Miss Latour, director of equity and cultural responsiveness, described district activities held for Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 16-Oct. 15), including morning-announcement lessons, library displays with books by and about Hispanic and Latin American authors, classroom arts activities featuring papel picado and other traditional crafts, performances of music and dance (including Mexican folk dance and dances from Bolivia), and collaborative projects involving ELD teachers and student groups to showcase Hispanic and Latinx artists, writers, political leaders, scientists and activists.
Board members praised the presentations and said they looked forward to more student-led programming.
Why this matters: Classroom- and school-level cultural programming and student activities are part of the districts equity-and-engagement work and give students opportunities to present and lead school events.
