City Manager Randy told Poquoson City Council on Oct. 11 that engineering and design work is underway for sidewalk segments the council previously identified, and he asked for guidance on which side of Poquoson Avenue to advance for the next phase.
Randy said the mayor and he had met individually with council members and that survey work and preliminary design are complete for identified segments. He described a proposed next step to extend the existing sidewalk on the north side from where it ends by the garden atriums to Woodland Road and requested informal consensus to proceed with engineering and design for the first two segments on that north side.
Council members responded with head nods and near-unanimous support; Councilman Keith (who performed his own field observations during the storm) spoke in favor of the north-side option, citing drainage patterns and practical routing. Randy said the cost of the design will be within the original allocation, that staff are not asking for additional appropriations at this time and that construction bidding will come later and may require further funding requests.
Randy said he would issue a task order to the city engineer to begin the consultant work for the two segments as soon as possible.
