Human resources report lists routing personnel items; board member to separate coaches assignment vote next week

The district's human resources report on Oct. 27 included seven items that the board will consider next week. Items previewed included resignations, retirements, appointments, volunteers, the inductee mentor list for the school year, winter extracurricular activity assignments (item 13.4), an MOU with the WEA to clarify contract language about a 16-step professional bonus, conference approval and approval of a hearing officer's recommendation that was reviewed in executive session.
A board member asked that item 13.4 (winter extracurricular assignments) be pulled out for separate voting at the next meeting and stated she will continue to vote no on that item until the board "reestablishes how we look at our athletic coaches." The HR director explained mentors must be tenured teachers selected by the building principal and that mentors volunteer for the induction program.
Why this matters: Personnel actions affect staff, extracurricular programs and the implementation of negotiated contract language. The MOU with the WEA is intended to clarify previously bargained language about a step bonus; the hearing officer recommendation and several personnel items were discussed in executive session and not disclosed publicly at length.
Next steps: The board will vote on HR items at the Nov. 3 meeting. The member requesting separation of item 13.4 said she will continue to oppose that staffing assignment until further changes are made.
