The Alexandria City Council on Oct. 28 adopted two proclamations: one honoring Carr Properties and partners for archaeology work related to the Alexander Canal in Old Town North, and a second recognizing October 2025 as Red Ribbon Week, the national youth substance-abuse-prevention campaign.
Councilman Mike McPike read and moved adoption of the Bernard "Ben Bremen" archaeology proclamation, praising the partnership among Carr Properties, the Alexandria Archaeological Commission and volunteer groups for excavation, preservation and public archaeology activities tied to canal stones and a lock discovered during construction at 425 Montgomery. Eleanor Breen, the city archaeologist, and Allison Wirtzler of Carr Properties described the public archaeology day and community engagement; volunteers and commission members attended and were recognized. The motion to adopt the proclamation was seconded by Councilwoman May Green and passed by voice vote.
Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley read the Red Ribbon Week proclamation, noting partnerships with the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria, ACPS Family and Community Engagement Center, Northern Virginia Family Services and the Mayor's Campaign to End Bullying. Youth ambassadors and peer advocates described a poster contest that runs through Nov. 16 and local peer-advocate work in schools. The council adopted the proclamation on a motion by Vice Mayor Bagley, seconded by Councilman Chapman. Councilmembers and staff urged continued outreach and display of winning posters in community locations.
