Riverview Elementary marks 70 years; district honors staff and high school band

Riverview Elementary celebrated its 70th birthday at the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District Board of Education meeting on Oct. 20, with school staff, PTA members and students sharing details of recent events and service projects.
Riverview staff said PTA volunteers helped provide refreshments for a birthday celebration that included bounce houses, a birthday circle and a family back-to-school bash with food trucks. Mackenzie Henninger, a third-grade teacher and student council adviser, described student council activities including a food drive and a planned field trip to Good Neighbors in November to donate and tour the facility; she also described the school's student leadership programs and the American Heart Association "Kids Heart Challenge" planned later in the year.
Several student council members spoke to the board about their roles, how representatives are chosen and events such as a "Bulldog dash" color run, school pajama and game days, fourth-grade celebrations and a drive-in movie. One student said, "I would enjoy representing the students at Riverview. One goal I have is to make everyone feel welcome here." (Student speaker, transcript)
During the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Doug Gould presented October Bulldog Center Stage awards to multiple district employees, including: Deb Cook (Woodland, cook/server), Tom Cox (bus garage, substitute bus driver), Stacy Curry and Emily Workman (Highland Elementary, support staff), Sylvia Duker (Kimpton, secretary), Tim Dustin (Riverview, EBS intervention specialist), Megan Hayward (Fish Creek, kindergarten teacher), Brian Morrison (Echo Hills, PE teacher), Nicole Poster (Indian Trail, school psychologist), Molly Quinn (Lakeview, cook/server), and Tim Renner (Stow-Munroe Falls High School, assistant principal).
The board also recognized Stow-Munroe Falls High School band achievements. Superintendent Gould said the band program has 188 students and performs more than 25 times each year; the band student president Tristan Roach received the Larry Maymos inspirational bandsman award. Band directors recognized at the meeting included Greg Newman, Sam Salmon, Crystal DeWitt and Tom Lewis.
