The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees approved two student‑release days for French Quarter Middle School to give staff concentrated professional development and coaching.
Teachers and administrators told the board the school moved this year to more self‑contained classrooms and assigned several teachers new content areas (ELA and math) without prior training. Presenters said many teachers are new to the Savvas ELA and the district’s math materials and need time for hands‑on training, planning and differentiation strategies. The staff proposed Nov. 14 for Savvas training and Dec. 12 for follow‑up work so first‑semester instruction can incorporate new practices.
School leaders said Title I funds had been written into the budget to pay for a live Savvas trainer to provide a half‑day for fifth grade and a half‑day for sixth grade. Trustees expressed support for focused, relevant professional development and approved the request by unanimous vote.
Board minutes show the motion passed with no recorded opposition. Staff will finalize substitute coverage and trainer contracts ahead of the approved dates.
