Residents across Houston decry missed heavy-trash pickups and illegal dumping

Residents from multiple neighborhoods told the council they are experiencing repeated missed heavy-trash collections, chronic illegal dumping and overflowing recycling that create public-health and livability problems.
Speakers described months-long delays in scheduled heavy-trash or bulky-item collections, piles of furniture and construction waste lingering in front of homes, and inconsistent recycling pickup that sends paper and plastics into the streets. "We are done playing the city games. We are not asking. We are demanding a supplemental maintenance program that brings contractors in to clean up South Union," said Tamara Alexander.
Several council members acknowledged the problem and described local efforts to augment city services with district service funds and pilot programs. Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex Tatum said the administration is finalizing an on-demand trash pilot in select districts and that Solid Waste is coordinating a community meeting for affected neighborhoods. Council offices said residents should submit service requests with SR numbers and copy district staff to expedite response while longer-term operational fixes are designed.
What callers asked for: predictable collection schedules, an on-demand bulk pickup pilot, more enforcement against illegal dumping, regular communication and faster responses to 311 service requests.
