Insurance committee recommends continuing Cigna plan with 5% premium increase; county commission to vote Nov. 3

The Bradley County insurance committee voted unanimously last week to recommend the mayor continue employee health coverage with Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company, committee members told commissioners at the meeting.
"The plan offers four options to employees with no changes to benefits and a 5% premium increase," Commissioner Ledford reported. He said the committee would place the recommendation on the Nov. 3 voting-session agenda.
Ledford later provided cost figures: a total annual cost of $5,300,000, $778 per individual and 644 employees enrolled. Commissioners at the meeting raised questions about the size of the increase and urged continued scrutiny of vendors and bids; Commissioner Gilbert said a 5% increase represents roughly $275,000 in additional premiums for the county.
The recommendation was made at the insurance committee level and has not yet been adopted by the full commission. The Nov. 3 agenda will carry the committee's recommendation for a final vote.
