Brunswick board hears construction update on new high school; timeline unchanged for May 2027 move‑in

Scott Ollman, the project architect and project manager with Den Design Architecture, and Derek Similia, construction manager with Hammond Construction, told the Brunswick Board of Education on Oct. 21 that construction of the new Brunswick High School is on schedule and proceeding through major structural milestones.
The presentation outlined recent progress and near‑term work. The construction team reported about 255,000 of roughly 423,000 concrete masonry units (CMU) had been laid in the first four and a half months of masonry work, foundations required a little over 2,000 cubic yards of concrete, and total concrete volume for the project is about 5,800 cubic yards. Similia said the project is “on schedule” and that steel framing, roof decking and interior finishes will continue through the winter while masonry operations continue when weather permits.
Board members were shown the master schedule and told the district expects substantial completion of bearing walls plus the auditorium by winter, with an overall target to have the building ready for district move‑in by May 2027. The presenters emphasized that opening the building and finishing the site are separate: the building is scheduled to be available for occupancy in May 2027 but site work and certain exterior finishes will continue into 2028.
The construction team described phasing intended to limit winter delays: enclose areas 4, 5 and 7 before winter and proceed with steel framing and exterior structural framing through the colder months so interior work can progress. The team also noted the auditorium and some exterior veneer (brick/veneer units) will be completed in spring weather when masonry work is feasible.
Presenters described community engagement already completed — a groundbreaking, a beam‑signing event, and limited student tours — and said more public and staff tours will be scheduled as areas become safer and more enclosed. When asked about local economic impact, the presenters cited an economic‑impact estimate derived from an Ohio State University model and said the project would produce roughly $30 million in local economic activity tied to the construction effort.
The board was shown photos and phased drawings, and members asked practical questions about the building footprint and the location of primary entrances. Scott Ollman and Derek Similia walked through what looks like corridors versus exterior classroom walls and explained temporary protection strategies (for example, temporary plywood at entry openings until permanent curtainwall/glass is installed).
The board thanked the project team and was reminded that the district maintains a construction project page on the district website with periodic updates and photos.
