Bedford board approves one‑year addendum to teachersretirement incentive

The Bedford School Board on Oct. 14 approved a one‑year addendum to Article 15 of the Bedford Education Association collective bargaining agreement creating a second, reduced planned‑retirement option for eligible teachers.

Under the addendum, eligible staff may choose a single‑year planned retirement payment instead of the current two‑year benefit. The reduced option removes eligibility for the second payment and for district health and dental contributions but allows a one‑time payment equivalent to up to $2,000 per year of service in Bedford subject to an existing $25,000 cap. The addendum is set to expire on June 30, 2026, and may be renewed only by mutual agreement of the parties.

Administrators said the provision is intended to help longtime staff who are near retirement but need another year of income to make retirement feasible; it also creates more opportunities for newly hired teachers to enter district classrooms. The district intends to track the fiscal effect and will present a report to the board following the next hiring cycle showing any savings or costs associated with turnover and replacement salaries.

Board members raised questions about the proposed language that would make additional approvals "at the sole discretion of the school board." After discussion the board agreed to revise the wording so additional retiree approvals would be considered at the superintendentrecommendation and require school board approval, ensuring the board would be involved if the number of approved retirees expanded beyond the usual three slots.

The board approved the addendum by motion. The administration said the BEA executive board had reviewed the document and would act on it the following day; the district planned a signing ceremony once both parties completed their approvals.
