Canyon ISD board adopts revised library‑materials policy, forms School Library Advisory Council

The Canyon ISD Board of Directors on Oct. 20 adopted revisions to local policy EFB governing library materials and approved the creation of a School Library Advisory Council to advise library review and access decisions. Board members discussed specific language on removal and notification and added clarifying language about who must be notified if a challenged title is removed or access is limited.

Under the adopted language, district staff explained, if a challenge results in removal or a limitation of access, campus administrators, librarians, teachers and “other applicable personnel” at the affected grade levels must be notified and instructed to remove physical copies and to deny access consistent with the school library advisory council’s recommendation. A staff presenter also told the board the district expects online catalogs to be updated within 45 days of a material’s removal and that the district will update a library procedures document posted on the website when the policy is finalized.

The board also discussed how nominations for the advisory council will be handled. The board confirmed non‑parents would serve as non‑voting members and that nominations could be brought forward at future meetings; the panel will include parents already appointed by board members and additional community, staff and business representatives. Board members nominated non‑voting district administrators and community members during the workshop and later voted to approve the council membership process.

The policy package also adds an explicit reference to book fairs and delegates development of operational details to the library procedures manual to be maintained by librarians and assigned administrators. The board adopted the revised policy by unanimous vote.
