Code enforcement: 14 of 20 rental inspections passed; staff gives inspection contact numbers

City code enforcement staff updated the Kennett City Council on rental-property inspections and clarified how residents and contractors should request inspections.
Staff reported that from Aug. 1 through the current date the city completed 20 rental-property inspections; 14 passed and six remain in progress because of scheduling and staffing interruptions. The council discussion noted personal leaves and scheduling issues had affected inspection throughput.
Code enforcement representatives and the fire department said inspectors maintain cell phones for inspection scheduling and asked the public to call those numbers only when they are ready for an inspection. Staff provided these contacts for scheduling: the rental-inspection cell number (559-6029), code-enforcement cell number (344-2289), a general code-enforcement office number (888-3005) and the fire department administration number (888-5337). Staff said the office phone system can forward messages to on-call staff and asked callers to leave messages if the inspector is not on site.
Why it matters: renters, landlords and contractors use these procedures to schedule inspections. Staff asked that callers contact the inspector only when the property is ready for an inspection so staff time is used efficiently.
