Kennett staff: ordinance places no limit on residential trash cans; extra cans available for a fee

City staff told the Kennett City Council that the current city ordinance does not limit the number of residential trash cans and described how residents can request additional service.

Jamie, a sanitation department representative, told the council that “there is not a limit on cans.” She said residents can call the sanitation office or visit kvpw.net/sanitation to request extra cans and that the initial can is $18.95 with each additional container at $10. “They can cancel it anytime,” Jamie said, describing the department’s process for adding or removing containers.

Staff also described deployment logistics. Jamie said crews are dropping off first cans now, with additional cans delivered either at the same time or after the initial rollout depending on when the request was made. She said requests placed later in the rollout may require an additional service charge if crews must return to deploy containers.

Holiday pickup rules were clarified: staff said bagged trash placed around cans during the week following Thanksgiving and other holidays will be collected, but loose trash left outside containers will not be picked up. Jamie said, “If it’s bagged around the cans, we will pick those up the week following the holidays.”

Officials also reported that transfer-station permitting is in process. Jamie said the transfer station’s tire-permitting paperwork is in the mail and the department will post permitting and service details on the sanitation webpage when available.

Why it matters: the clarification removes uncertainty for residents about how many containers they may request and explains timing and costs for extra service. The council said it will post the ordinance text online so residents can find it easily.
