Commission approves stop sign on Quarry Road after residents report near-misses with gravel trucks

Roane County Commissioners voted Oct. 9 to place a stop sign on Quarry Road where residents had reported near-misses involving heavy gravel trucks and limited sight lines.

Several residents, including Isaac Dawson, spoke during the citizens’ portion of the meeting, describing incidents in which loaded gravel trucks failed to yield at a marked intersection. Dawson offered to provide photographs showing truck encroachments and said the lack of striping and limited sight-lines contributed to the hazard. Commissioners referred the matter to the road committee, which inspected the location, and then approved a resolution to replace the yield sign with a stop sign and urged consideration of rumble strips ahead of the sign to improve driver awareness.

The motion to place the stop sign was made by Commissioner Hendricks and seconded; the measure carried with a unanimous vote of the commission.
