Key items the board approved included a 30-year ground lease with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for a sound-side parcel adjacent to the Wildlife Education Center in Corolla; a resolution supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans and a ceremonial resolution recognizing the Corolla Light Community Association’s 40th anniversary.
On ordinances, the board removed local fees for meter tampering from Currituck County Code §13-19 after staff explained that meter tampering is criminalized under state law and a local penalty would exceed county authority. Other ordinance amendments that passed (some as first readings and to be finalized at a subsequent meeting) revised advisory-board membership rules, appointment methods and compensation references. Those actions included changes to the animal services and control advisory board, the Fire and EMS Advisory Board (renamed the Fire Advisory Board and revised to include five voting department chiefs and two nonvoting members), the Ocean Sands and Crown Point Service District advisory, the opioid advisory board, the tourism advisory board and the historic preservation commission.
The board also adopted an ordinance codifying the Carova Beach Road Service District advisory board. Commissioners specifically required the sheriff’s office designee and the county fire chief (or their designees) be nonvoting and nonpaid members of that service-district board because members would typically attend during duty hours.
Several of these items were described by staff as first readings and will return for second reading and final adoption at a subsequent meeting where a full board is present. Consent-agenda items were approved without further discussion.
