A commission member told the Residential Traffic Commission that a local "bike bus"—a group of adults leading children on bicycles—was observed riding in multiple files and crossing intersections without stopping near Leesburg Elementary.
"I was out driving and a group of cyclists... they were riding all over the street. It was not single file. It was not following any type of road rules for cyclists," the commission member said, describing an afternoon ride. The member asked the commission to reach out to school organizers and remind adult leaders to follow traffic rules to model safe behavior for children.
Commission members suggested contacting the school or SROs (school resource officers) so safety information can be distributed and said they would seek a letter or outreach through the school administration. One commissioner offered to contact the school principal directly.
Staff agreed the topic merits follow-up and said they would work on outreach options for next year’s bike-bus season and coordinate with the schools if the administration is willing to distribute materials.
