The Board of Supervisors adopted a proclamation designating Oct. 23–30 as Red Ribbon Week on Oct. 21 and heard several speakers from the community and youth groups in support of prevention work.
Supervisor Plummer read the proclamation emphasizing the historical origins of Red Ribbon Week and the county’s partnership with Shasta County Chemical People and school-based groups. “It is important that the entire community…unite to organize, support, and promote community awareness of tobacco, alcohol and other drug problems and encourage drug-free choices,” the resolution states.
Youth representatives from local high schools’ Friday Night Live clubs and other community volunteers addressed the board and invited the public to events including lighting the Sundial Bridge red on Oct. 23 and a drug take-back on Oct. 25 at Reading City Hall. The board voted to adopt the proclamation by unanimous voice vote.
Why it matters: The proclamation is ceremonial but it signals county support for prevention campaigns, community outreach and local take-back events tied to the opioid and substance-use response.
