Clallam County MRC hears encouraging pinto abalone survey results; WDFW boat support credited

Volunteers and project leads reported ongoing pinto abalone diving surveys during the Oct. 20 Clallam County MRC meeting, saying the survey team located multiple pinto abalone during recent days of work and benefited from in-kind support from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
"We found 8 pinto abalone just on the last day I was there," a project lead reported, noting field days remain and that WDFW has provided boat access in kind, which reduced costs and enabled additional survey effort. Committee members said the divers are avoiding identifying landmarks in photos to protect sensitive sites.
Members discussed logistics, budget constraints for any future collections and the potential for including recent findings in the next quarterly report. The committee requested that project leads forward photos and summary notes to staff so the data can be added to the next written update to the committee.
