Volunteers seek help as county raises Fort Crescent Cemetery budget amid maintenance needs

County staff told commissioners the Fort Crescent (referred to in materials as Port Crescent) Cemetery is managed by a volunteer board that currently has only three members and has asked the county for modest additional maintenance support.
Lonnie, a staff member who spoke about the cemetery, said the county historically purchased small supplies such as flags and has provided occasional maintenance help. "This year they have asked us to maybe help with some additional maintenance of the cemetery," she said, listing needs such as repairs to historical signs, weed and vine removal, mower parts and a flagpole repair. Lonnie also noted turnover on the volunteer board and the presence of only three volunteers.
Staff recounted a 1974 county resolution establishing responsibility for the cemetery. Commissioners discussed whether to increase the cemetery budget from $350 to $1,000 to cover additional requests and to await a formal list of requests from the volunteer board so facilities or ER&R can evaluate in‑kind help versus paid repairs.
The board asked staff to obtain a written list of volunteer requests and costs, coordinate with facilities on potential in‑kind maintenance support, and return with a recommendation for a budget adjustment if needed.
