ARB approves reinstallation of Juliet balcony and wrought-iron fence at 1205 Prince Edward Street
Summary
The ARB approved COA 02/1944 to reinstall a semicircular Juliet balcony documented in historic photos and to install salvaged wrought-iron fencing in the front yard at 1205 Prince Edward Street. The fence must be bolted to the neighboring brick wall through the mortar joints rather than into the brick face.

The Fredericksburg Architectural Review Board approved COA 02/1944 to restore a documented semicircular Juliet balcony and install salvaged wrought-iron fencing at the late-19th-century house at 1205 Prince Edward Street.
Staff presented historic photographs (including a 1945 image) and physical evidence indicating the balcony previously existed at the same façade opening. The balcony components and semicircular rail and brackets were reportedly stored on the property and match porch railing details visible elsewhere on the house. The applicant proposed a new semicircular deck framed and faced with painted tongue-and-groove wood decking and bolted railing brackets attaching into house framing; the railing and brackets will be painted to match existing trim.
The applicant, Chris Hornung, said the fence panels were salvaged from the same period and that he had no gate to install at this time but hoped to fabricate a matching gate from surplus materials and requested staff-level review if that occurs in the future.
Board members discussed mounting details and asked that any attachment to the adjacent brick wall be made through the mortar joints rather than the brick face. A motion to approve the COA with that condition passed 6-0.
Ending: The applicant may proceed with the balcony reinstallation and fence as outlined; staff noted that a future gate made from surplus panels may be considered via a streamlined staff review if the board’s condition is observed.
