Judge says $4,064 state grant will help pay evaluations for domestic‑violence treatment

She told the board the standard evaluation for placement in one of the evidence‑based programs costs about $350 and that subsequent treatment costs (roughly $50 per class with four classes per month) can total about $2,700 per year for an individual, an amount many sentenced defendants cannot afford. Judge Capone said roughly 90% of defendants in these cases are indigent and that health insurance does not cover these assessments.
She said she requested $70,000 from the state program to fully fund assessments and classes for multiple defendants but received an award of $4,064. Judge Capone said the award will be used to subsidize assessments and that probation will help prioritize who receives assistance. She said the county’s role would be limited to approving acceptance of the grant on the upcoming consent agenda and that she is continuing to seek other grants to expand support.
Commissioners and staff discussed administrative costs for small awards and who would manage disbursements; Judge Capone said probation (Yolanda) would monitor the funds and disbursements. No board action was taken at the briefing; the grant acceptance will appear on the consent agenda.
