City wins $380,000 trail grant and $150,000 REAP award for campground expansion

City staff reported two external grant awards: $380,000 from the Iowa DOT Transportation Alternatives Program for replacement of a section of the Cedar Prairie Trail (joint with Waterloo), and $150,000 from the Iowa DNR REAP program to expand Big Woods Campground by about 20 sites and an ADA-compliant restroom/shower facility.
City staff told the council Monday that the city was awarded two competitive grants earlier this fall.
Director Shockey reported the city — jointly with Waterloo because the municipal boundary bisects the trail — won $380,000 from the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program to replace a section of the Cedar Prairie Trail near Ridgeway Avenue. "We were recently notified that we were awarded $380,000 for the replacement of that trail," Shockey said.
Staff also reported a $150,000 Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to support the previously discussed Big Woods Campground expansion, which the packet said would add approximately 20 new campsites and an ADA-compliant shower and restroom facility.
The grants were acknowledged by the council; staff indicated contracting and next steps would follow and that the $380,000 award requires coordination with Waterloo because the trail crosses municipal boundaries.
