Pike County approves multiple vehicle and equipment purchases, authorizes compactor repair and plow replacements

Pike County Fiscal Court approved several procurement and repair items affecting county fleet and public-works equipment.

The court approved issuance of a check to pay Walter’s Ford $70,300 for a previously awarded bid (bid 28-2025) for a 1-ton crew cab dually truck replaced after an accident. Separately, the coroner’s office had a single responsive bidder for bid 29-2025; the court awarded that contract to Walter’s Toyota for $48,077 and authorized payment.

The county reported a recycling grant through Protainer to purchase pro roll-off recycling drop boxes. The county had applied for 13 boxes and the state-approved award was for eight; the court authorized purchase under the grant with no local tax impact.

At the landfill, staff reported the county’s backup compactor (referred to by staff as the Al John/Algon compactor) is experiencing engine issues and runs only about 20 minutes before overheating. Staff described a vendor inspection that recommended replacing the center section, all hoses and wiring, and installing a new Cat Tier-3 engine rather than buying a new compactor (new units were described as roughly $800,000). The county presented a vendor quote for repairs; the transcript includes an unclear numeric reading of the quote. Court members approved proceeding with the repairs and noted a sole-source procurement exception under KRS because the vendor is the only supplier in the geographic area that performs that specialized work.

Following spring flooding that damaged five plows, the court authorized ordering five replacement plows (four 8.5-foot Western plows and one 9.5-foot Western plow) at a total cost of $43,775. Officials said they expect FEMA to reimburse the cost.

All procurement motions were passed by roll-call votes with the recorded commissioners voting yes.
