The Jonesborough Board of Aldermen unanimously approved the purchase of a two-acre parcel at the corner of College Street and Sabine Drive, a tract town leaders said would create downtown parking and provide land for future municipal building expansion.
Mayor and staff framed the acquisition as a rare opportunity to secure contiguous land near town hall, the visitor center and the library. "If you buy it today, you're gonna get it a lot cheaper than you would if you went to buy it 5 years from now," the mayor said while urging the council to act on the opportunity.
Administrator Adam Rosenoff and staff documented financing options in the meeting packet. Finance staff confirmed the purchase would come from the town’s capital outlay fund; no additional borrowing was planned. The mayor noted the town also expects an increase in state funds tied to updated population figures next year and said part of that increase could be applied to the purchase.
Alderman Dixon moved to approve the purchase; Alderman Countermine seconded. A roll call recorded the four aldermen voting "aye." The board approved the authorization to acquire the parcel; staff will return with closing details and an implementation plan addressing parking and future facility siting.
