Adrian commission approves $18,000 community poll with schools to gauge support for pool and sports complex

The Adrian City Commission unanimously adopted Resolution R25-062 on Nov. 3 to contract with Epic MRA to conduct a community poll measuring public opinion on the future of Bone Pool and on a possible sports complex.
Commissioner Gordon Behnke moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Casselberry seconded. Commissioner Behnke said the polling will provide nonpartisan, statistically valid data to inform whether the city should consider revamping the existing pool, building a new pool at a different site, or seeking voter approval for a related funding measure. He said the school district will share the cost and that the total cost of the polling is expected to be about $18,000, which the city and Adrian Public Schools would split.
“This tool will be able to acquire the right data, to provide us commission[s] the ability to navigate this,” Behnke said, describing the poll as a strategic means to measure public appetite before pursuing major expenditure or ballot measures.
Commissioners noted Epic MRA’s prior use in the community and emphasized the need to notify residents in advance of phone outreach to improve response rates. The commission did not specify final ballot language or a project site; the resolution funds polling and information-gathering only.
Roll-call voting on the resolution was unanimous: Behnke (yes), Miller (yes), Casselberry (yes), Gauss (yes), Schwartz (yes), Roberts (yes), Mayor Heath (yes). The motion carried.
Next steps include coordinating the polling schedule with Epic MRA and Adrian Public Schools and public notice of the outreach dates and methods so residents can expect phone-based contact, the commission said. If polling shows sufficient support, any proposal to change facilities or pursue funding would require additional commission action and, where applicable, voter approval.
