Broward County Commissioner Richard Walter appeared before the Fort Lauderdale City Commission to deliver multiple checks totaling $5,402,251 for city infrastructure and marine safety. He presented $4,020,769 for the International Swimming Hall of Fame peninsula seawall; $1,032,636 for Riverwalk North replacement; a $250,000 check for promenade and docks at the International Swimming Hall of Fame peninsula; and $48,846 for new engines for the Fort Lauderdale Police Marine Unit.
Commissioner Walter described having advocated in Tallahassee for the funds and thanked city leaders for partnership. He introduced Captain Jeffrey (Jeff) Hart of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who outlined FWC’s role in boat and waterways safety, removal of derelict vessels and work with law enforcement partners to protect the intercoastal waterways from navigational hazards and pollution.
Sarah Perry, founder of the Aiden Perry Good Samaritan Scholarship Fund and the Aiden Perry Hero Life Ring Initiative, described losing her 17-year-old son Aiden while he attempted to rescue a driver from a vehicle that had entered a lake. Perry said her organization has donated life rings across the city at parks and water-taxi stops, supplied life rings to marine police boats, and is working with the water-trolley system to add life rings at stops. She asked the commission and residents to help identify additional bodies of water, HOAs and owner/operators that could host lifesaving rings.
FWC Captain Hart and Commissioner Walter emphasized partnerships among FWC, police, and community organizations to increase boat safety, remove derelict vessels that threaten navigation and water quality, and support public awareness. Perry said life rings installed by her initiative have already been used to save lives and asked the city to help the initiative scale placement.
No formal commission action was required to accept the ceremonial presentation; the checks and the presentations were given as public recognition of intergovernmental funding and community safety programs.
