State Senator Ayesha Wahab (D) delivered a standing legislative update during the board's midday session, summarizing bills and state investments that affect Santa Clara County and the senator's district.
Wahab highlighted 2025 budget and policy outcomes she said were consequential for housing and consumer protections, including funding toward homeless and housing assistance, multi‑family and deeply affordable housing programs and a down‑payment assistance program for first‑time buyers. She described a large set of related bills and budget actions that were signed into law earlier in the year, including protections against large homeowner association fines, new protections aimed at so‑called 'zombie mortgages' and state investments in public‑hospital and burn‑center infrastructure. Wahab said the state has also provided funds for transit and local public‑safety grants and is allocating resources to host the World Cup in parts of the Bay Area.
During her remarks she cited an recent law (SB 681, carried into the budget) as a multi‑part package of renter tax‑credit increases and other measures she described as a '60‑page' housing and consumer package.
Wahab announced a recommended state allocation of $1,000,000 to Santa Clara County for family‑shelter land acquisition and described additional district‑level allocations for local projects, emergency services and nonprofit partners. She also urged continued local‑state coordination on homelessness prevention, workforce supports and public‑safety planning for large events.
The board thanked Wahab for the update and for her office's partnership on the announced funding. There were no formal actions attached to the senator's presentation.
