City says Main Street construction near completion; lights and landscaping expected by Thanksgiving

Tony Steinhardt, Madison’s director of economic development and deputy mayor, told the council on Nov. 4 that Main Street construction is entering its final phase and most work should be complete by Thanksgiving.
"We should have all the asphalt finished in the next day and a half. Striping has begun," Steinhardt said, adding that the striping material is the thermoplastic used on state interstates and is intended to be durable. He said the project includes traffic calming on the east end from Jefferson to St. Michael’s and that traffic in front of the courthouse will be shifted into a single lane to reduce speeding and congestion.
Steinhardt said landscaping and streetlight installation are expected to be finished by Thanksgiving, with Broadway Street ready for the city’s Light Up Madison event. He also described West End improvements that will continue into next spring, and he updated the council on the Heritage Trail project, noting that rock-wall systems are in place and crews aim to get the base coat down to keep the trail on schedule for spring completion.
Council members asked whether signal timing adjustments with NDOT would be coordinated for the new traffic pattern at Walnut and Jefferson; Steinhardt said signal timing is an option and the city will work with state officials as needed.
Steinhardt said crews will try to maintain trail access over the creek with temporary safety fencing while work continues through winter.
