Weber County names Clerk/Auditor office as chief administrative officer for data privacy under new state legislation

The Weber County Commission on Nov. 4 approved Resolution 42‑2025 designating the Weber County Clerk/Auditor as the county’s chief administrative officer (CAO) for data privacy.
Chris Crockett, presenting the item, said recent state legislation requires county oversight of the collection and handling of personal information. The county will undertake a multi‑year effort to review where personal data is collected across departments, ensure required disclosures and notices are in place, and set up centralized oversight.
Crockett said the designation attaches the responsibility to an elected office — the Clerk/Auditor — rather than to a specific person; that allows the county to preserve continuity if officeholders change. He added that the office may delegate work to county employees as needed. Commissioners asked no substantive questions and approved the resolution by roll call vote.
