Placer County creates unclassified deputy director position for sheriff's support services

The Placer County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 4 approved the creation of an unclassified deputy director position for the Sheriff's Office to provide executive-level, civilian oversight of support services.
Human Resources Director Joe Ambrosini said the review found opportunities to improve efficiencies and coordination across the sheriff's administrative and operational support functions. The new deputy director will report to the undersheriff, supervise fiscal and budget operations, HR, dispatch, records, fleet, IT, facilities, contract administration and grants management and serve on the department executive team.
Ambrosini said the proposed salary range places the role at a high-level management rate and the classification is suitable for the unclassified service given the scope and authority. The Sheriff told the board the change is intended to provide stable civilian leadership of professional staff, avoid the need to add an additional sworn captain position and create career progression for non-sworn employees. "This will be a complex assignment, supervising anywhere from a 130 to a 150 staff members," the Sheriff said.
The board voted to introduce the uncodified ordinance to amend the schedule of classifications and compensation and create the deputy director classification and then approved the action by motion.
