Jefferson County honors World War II veteran Herbert G. Williams with Hometown Hero proclamation

The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners presented a Hometown Hero proclamation recognizing Private First Class Herbert G. Williams on the evening the board met.
The proclamation, read by Marissa King, detailed Williams’ life and military service, saying he “joined the fight line enlisting in the United States Army” in March 1944, served with the 120th Infantry Regiment of the Eighth Infantry Division, landed in France after D-Day and took part in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest. It noted he was killed in action east of Düren, Germany, on Feb. 27, 1945, at age 29 and is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.
The proclamation was issued by Mayor Mark Cots in conjunction with the Jefferson County commissioners and said that Williams “will always be remembered for the sacrifice he made to Jefferson County, Tennessee and The United States Of America.” Carrie Beth Seaton, Williams’ great-granddaughter, and other family members were present for the reading and the presentation.
The county thanked the archives office, including Sheila Evans, for coordinating the recognition and commissioners Joe Coleman and Jimmy Patterson joined the mayor in presenting a plaque to Williams’ family.
The event was part of the board’s ceremonial agenda and did not include a formal vote affecting county policy or budget.
