Council receives Stormwater Management Advisory Commission report and approves SMAC work plan

Wayne Miles, stormwater manager in engineering services, and Graham Smith, SMAC chair, presented the stormwater management advisory commission’s annual report and proposed priorities for 2026. The commission outlined top priorities including review of stormwater elements in planning cases, advancing floodplain management, reviewing capital and operational budgets, expanding drainage assistance and stream stabilization projects, supporting watershed planning and continuing green stormwater infrastructure implementation.
Smith highlighted recent program results — live‑stake installations for stream stabilization, Raleigh Rainwater Rewards projects and cistern installations capturing significant runoff — and said staff and SMAC have been coordinating distribution of projects citywide. Council thanked SMAC for field tours and noted the city’s progress moving the community flood rating toward improved class ratings through mitigation work.
Council moved, seconded and approved the SMAC work plan and related motions to receive the report.
