Raleigh Commission for Persons with Disabilities presents annual report; council approves FY25–26 work plan

Philip Woodward, co‑chair of the Raleigh Commission for Persons with Disabilities, presented the commission’s FY24–25 annual report and a work plan for FY25–26. The commission highlighted events it hosted (an employer resource day, a transportation town hall, and annual awards bannquets) and outlined five focus areas: community and transportation assets; education and employment; health, wellness and recreation; housing; and public awareness.
Woodward said the commission is considering how to engage on affordable and accessible housing and is supporting commissioners to attend relevant conferences. The commission proposed a fiscal‑year budget of $25,000 to fund scholarships for students with disabilities ($6,000), an employer resource day ($3,000), an awards banquet ($8,000), ADA accommodations ($5,000), outreach ($1,000), recreation camp scholarships ($1,500) and conference support ($500).
Council discussed proposed exceptions to bylaws including term limits and residency qualifications for commissioners, and asked the city attorney and staff to research precedents and provide historical membership data. Council received the annual report and unanimously approved the commission’s FY25–26 work plan; funding remains subject to the city’s overall budget process.
