Canton Planning Commission adopts minor corrections to master plan future land use map

The Canton Township Planning Commission on Oct. 6 adopted three non-substantive corrections to the master plan future land use map adopted in June.

Planning staff presented the corrections as a housekeeping matter: a medium-density residential classification missing from the map legend, a misnumbering of the five special planning areas along Michigan Avenue in the legend, and a single parcel north of the Lower Rouge River (acquired by the township in 2024 and known as the Geshe Wedogne Nature Area) that was mislabeled as municipal instead of park. ‘‘Nothing on the map was altered except to correct the coloring for the Geshe Wedogne Nature Area from municipal to park,’’ Erin, planning staff, told the commission (00:03:28).

Commissioner Weber moved to adopt the corrected future land use map (draft No. 7) and Commissioner Singh supported the motion. After the public hearing was opened and closed without comment, the commission voted unanimously to adopt the corrections.

Why it matters: the corrections do not change the recommended uses or densities shown on the map except for the Geshe Wedogne parcel, which staff said was an inadvertent drafting error that the change corrects in order to maintain consistency between nature-area properties and the park designation. The township noted that the adoption only finalizes the legend and coloring fixes and does not alter the policy direction of the master plan.

What’s next: staff will incorporate the corrected legend and map graphics into the final master plan materials and distribute the revised files to the public and applicants.
