Board highlights holiday meal plans, events and volunteer contributions

At the Nov. 3 meeting the Gardner City Health and Aging Board heard a full report on upcoming holiday programming, trips and ongoing events and a summary of volunteer and contractor activity.
Staff described Thanksgiving and Christmas meal operations: a Thanksgiving program that includes drive-thru distribution (about 225 drive-thru meals last year) plus in-person dining and meal deliveries to first responders, and a December drive-thru meal. The board named partner organizations that help prepare and donate food and labor (local Elks lodge, Lions Club, AARP, Rotary and several restaurants and care providers). Staff asked residents to register for holiday meals to ensure adequate food and reduce the likelihood of turning people away.
The board was told of multiple upcoming events and trips, including a Mark Kistler program, concerts, Boston Pops trips and Medicare open-enrollment assistance (staff said about 1,200 Medicare appointments are scheduled annually and the fall period is the busiest). The board also announced a Red Cross smoke-detector event to support senior safety.
Staff presented preliminary volunteer and contractor data: about 750 volunteers in the current year (down from roughly 950 the prior year) contributing an estimated 20,537 hours of service to date; in-kind and monetary donations were reported at about $250,000. Staff said the center works with a roster of instructors, contractors and support-group facilitators to deliver programming.
No board action was required; the report was informational and staff sought continued board support for outreach and volunteer recruitment.
