The City Commission voted Nov. 3 to authorize demolition of the shuffleboard clubhouse at 101 Ninth Avenue after the structure was found to be substantially damaged by both the city’s building official and FEMA.
Public Services Director Camden Mills reported the city sought competitive proposals to assess whether rehabilitation was feasible. Staff received a low rehabilitation bid of approximately $192,000 and an updated insurance after‑cash value estimate of roughly $94,000; earlier quotes for demolition were substantially lower. FEMA’s environmental and historic preservation review recommended demolition and the Historic Preservation Board previously voted 5–0 to approve demolition.
Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute a demolition contract with the low bidder (Paw Materials Inc., d/b/a Paw Demolition). Mills said the city will coordinate with the shuffleboard club to identify short‑term storage needs and will engage planning and historic‑preservation bodies on future site options, including whether a donated historic house could be moved to the site as a replacement amenity.
Commissioner Maldonado and others expressed regret at losing a historic building but urged staff to explore donor or relocation options. The commission’s vote authorized demolition to remove a public‑health and safety hazard and directed staff to return with options for future site use.
