Gratiot County health official warns WIC funding uncertain; board OKs $3,500 grant request for safe-storage campaign

Liz Braddock, a health department representative, told the Gratiot County Board of Commissioners that the state had informed the department “benefits will be paid through November 24.” She said the county’s health department agreed it could continue WIC operations for 30 days if federal or state payments stop and that the department is coordinating with local food banks and community partners to meet client needs.

Braddock described WIC (Women, Infants and Children) services as “very important” to pregnant women and caregivers with children under 5 and said the department continues to offer routine childhood immunizations and seasonal flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines. She also reported a Delta Dental Foundation grant that funded a white minivan used by the department’s registered dental hygienist to perform mandatory kindergarten oral-health screenings in schools and preschools.

On a separate item, Braddock asked the board to authorize pursuit of a marijuana-operation and oversight grant to buy safe-storage bags for households with children. “Marijuana can sometimes look like gummy bears,” she said, arguing distribution of safe-storage devices would reduce accidental ingestions. The board voted to authorize approximately $3,500 to apply for that grant; the motion carried.

The health department will continue to monitor WIC funding and will adjust service commitments if state or federal guidance changes. Braddock also said the department will provide written updates and is open to attending quarterly board meetings to keep commissioners informed.
